The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday, September 3, approved the construction of a 25-km elevated road from Thane connecting to Navi Mumbai International Airport at a cost of INR 6,363 crore. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The project will be executed by CIDCO under a PPP model.

The CIDCO is tasked with securing all necessary permits within six months, while the overall completion timeframe is estimated at three years, subject to potential delays from environmental clearances and land acquisition processes.

Elevated Road Project

This initiative is considered a crucial urban infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity to NMIA. A six-lane elevated road will be built directly to connect the cities in the suburbs of Navi Mumbai. It also declared as an ambitious urban project.

As travel time greatly reduces, expenditure increases. The elevated road toll is expected to surpass the existing rates of Atal Setu.

It will significantly reduce travel time from Thane to the airport from approximately 90 minutes to just 30 minutes, thereby relieving congestion on the Eastern Express Highway and Thane-Belapur Road.

Acquisition of additional land for commercial use

The Cabinet approved land acquisition for commercial use along the corridor and allowed CIDCO to utilize government land beneath the elevated road at nominal costs.

As per reports, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to be inaugurated by the end of September, but it will take about 45 days for operations to commence after that.
