The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has approved an increase in tariffs for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. It is aimed at encouraging power companies to invest in infrastructure development. The revised tariff for all power companies will be INR 7.25/unit. Adani Electricity, BEST, and Tata Power will have a 14%, 16%, and 18% increase, respectively.

According to the MERC, the increased tariff will generate more revenue for power companies, and the profits could be invested in expanding EV infrastructure. The tariff concession of INR 1.50 per unit in energy wheeling fees for nighttime charging (10 pm-6 am) will encourage consumers to opt for affordable nighttime charging.

The new tariff will benefit individual users by making nighttime charging more accessible and affordable. Additionally, facilities at charging stations like restaurants and convenience stores must pay the commercial category rate for power usage. However, individual users may select distinct connections to charge their EVs under this category.

In the past four years, the annual registrations for EVs have gone up 40 times, and the transport commissioner office predicts a further 50% growth in EV registrations in 2023. As a result, more charging stations will be required to address the growing demand for EV charging stations in Mumbai.

The new tariff is expected to encourage power companies to install more charging stations, which will help to expand EV infrastructure in the city. The increased revenue generated by power companies will be utilised to support the growing demand for EVs and expand the charging network.
