Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) has significantly enhanced mobile network coverage across additional stretches of its underground corridor, offering improved connectivity for daily commuters.

According to an update shared by Mumbai Metro 3, Airtel users can now access uninterrupted mobile services between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), while Vodafone Idea (Vi) subscribers can enjoy network connectivity from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk. The expanded coverage will allow passengers to make calls, browse the internet, send messages, and complete digital transactions without interruption during their underground journeys.

The connectivity upgrade forms part of the phased rollout of telecom infrastructure along the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ Metro Line 3 corridor, which connects several major residential, commercial, and business districts across Mumbai.

The development follows a major service disruption on May 23, when metro operations on both UP and DOWN lines were affected, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for nearly three hours. The incident highlighted concerns over the absence of reliable communication and mobile network access within the underground network.

In response, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) awarded telecom infrastructure rights to leading service providers, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, and Vodafone Idea. The companies were tasked with deploying cellular infrastructure across stations and tunnels to ensure seamless voice and data services throughout the metro corridor.

While Airtel and Vi have already activated services across key sections, MMRCL officials confirmed that work is underway to introduce BSNL connectivity as well. BSNL services are expected to become operational inside the metro network within the next six months.

The enhanced network coverage is expected to improve both convenience and safety for passengers travelling on Mumbai's first fully underground metro line, benefiting thousands of commuters every day.

Additional Passenger Facilities Introduced

In a separate announcement, MMRCL stated that several new lifts and escalators across Aqua Line stations would become operational, further improving accessibility and passenger movement.

The newly opened facilities include:

  • Hutatma Chowk: Gates A1, A4, B1, and B3 (Lifts)
  • Grant Road: Gate A1 (Lift)
  • Dharavi: Gate A1 (Lift and Escalator)
  • Acharya Atre Chowk: Gate B1 (Lift) and Gate B2 (Escalator)
  • Science Centre: Gate A1
  • CSMIA-T1: Gate A (Escalator)
  • Sahar Road: Gates A4 and A5

The combined rollout of enhanced telecom services and improved station infrastructure reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen commuters' experience on the rapidly expanding Aqua Line network. For passengers who have long struggled with poor mobile connectivity underground, the latest upgrade marks a significant step toward a more connected and convenient metro journey.
