The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made it mandatory for all housing societies to segregate waste at the source. It was observed that the sorting was disrupted during the lockdown period.

In order to raise awareness again, the PMC has issued notice to resident societies reminding the citizens regarding waste sorting and given them eight days to do so. Moreover, the administration has announced a fine of ₹5,000 if the wet and dry wastes are not segregated.

As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the ghanta gadi will not collect garbage if it is not segregated.

Around 450 tons of garbage is collected in Panvel Municipal Corporation area every day. One and a half to two years ago, the Municipal Corporation took over the transfer of waste management from the former CIDCO colony in an area of 110 square meters. The Municipal Corporation itself buys garbage trucks and picks up the garbage and dumps it at the dumping ground near Ghot village of CIDCO.

As a result, there will be insufficient space for future waste processing projects and since there is no alternate site, waste management at the source with people’s participation is the only option left. Hence, the PMC has asked housing societies to segregate waste in four categories, namely dry waste, wet waste, household waste, and biological waste.

The municipal corporation has appointed health inspectors, who will estimate the amount of dry waste accumulated in their area and only dry waste will be collected once or twice a week as per the requirement in the respective areas, officials said. The civic body also stated that since the citizens are not segregating waste, the municipal administration is being forced to raise awareness again.
