Once again, an incident of a fire has been reported at the Deonar dumping ground. The fire incident which occurred on Monday evening has heated the issue of sudden fire eruption at the dumping ground yet again after two years.

A fire outbreak despite precautionary measures

Earlier in March 2016, a major fire had erupted at Deonar dumping ground which went on for several days before the firefighting team brought it under control. In response to which various measures were taken by the Municipal Corporation to ensure fire safety and avert the waste mafia from doing any more damage.

At the dumping ground, guard walls have been constructed in order to prevent unauthorised entry. Also, to monitor the activities, CCTV cameras and watchtowers have been put up. In case of a fire outburst, the Municipal Corporation has kept fire brigade vehicles and tankers ready to control the fire.

Respiratory problems for residents

After two years, a fire has erupted again, leaving smoke in the air. Due to the smoke, many citizens have faced respiratory problems. However, due to fear of respiratory discomfort for the surrounding people, the fire brigade officers immediately tried to regain control over the situation.

Water worth ₹17.28 lakhs used in 12 days

During the fire outbreak of March 2016, the fire lasted for 12 days and continuous efforts were made with the help of ten tankers for extinguishing the fire. Turbhe and Ghatkopar water reservoirs were used for a 24-hour supply of water which cost the Municipal Corporation around ₹17.28 lakh.

In March 2016, the proposal to get the cost of the water tankers approved by the Standing Committee was put forward and had been pending for two years. However, just when the proposal was put in front of the Standing Committee meeting on Monday evening, the fire erupted at the grounds. Was this really a coincidence? This situation raises multiple questions.
