Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday, April 24, that the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport will include water taxi services. This will make it the first international airport in India to offer such a facility.
The announcement was made during a review meeting with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the state-run planning body. Fadnavis said that the airport must have complete multi-modal transport connectivity. He emphasised that road, rail, metro, and waterway projects linked to the airport should be completed on time.

As per sources, the water taxis will be made using fibre-reinforced plastic. This material is strong, lightweight, and cost-effective. It is also popular in the shipping industry. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has asked the industry to work on cutting down material costs. The use of fibre-reinforced plastic is seen as a step toward making the service more sustainable.
Furthermore, the CM added that an efficient transport system must be in place from the metro station to the airport. He said efforts should be made to make sure that citizens face no trouble during this process.
He also spoke about the need for good aircraft repair facilities and accessible parking at the airport. He mentioned that all work being handled by CIDCO should stick to the planned schedule with set deadlines.
He also called for the presence of skilled professionals in the construction sectors. According to reports, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to begin operations in April 2025.
