On Thursday morning, nearly 200 fishing boats from the Worli Koliwada encircled a temporary jetty built by the municipal body at the construction site of the coastal road in Mumbai’s Worli, to raise their voices against the current work to construct an interchange bridge between the coastal road and the Bandra-Worli sea link, reported the Hindustan Times. In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) propelled three buoys into the water off the Koliwada to enable the movement of tugboats and barges in the vicinity, however, the fisher community believes that not only will this impede their work, but also wreck their nets.

The report quoted, a representative of the Worli Koliwada Nakhwa Vyavsay Cooperative Society, Nitesh Patil saying that without prior intimidation to them, the anchors were dropped. Adding that they had a meeting with the civic authority on October 8, where they were apprised about the requirement to make certain facilities to enable the tugboats and barges to move. For this, they were told that a survey will be conducted in the coming days to ensure that the community isn’t affected. However, in spite of this promise, anchors were dropped where the fisherfolk cast their nets, with the movement of tugboats causing a disturbance, three nets are also claimed to have been damaged by the anchors.

The account elaborated that on Thursday morning, from four different bunders, fishing boats in Worli Koliwada encircled the jetty and didn’t move until the anchors were taken away. The anchors were then taken away in the evening, prior to which police and BMC officials had to talk to the fisherfolk. On October 28, another meeting is slated to be conducted between the BMC officials are the fisherfolk.
