BMC Inoculates 3,493 Stray Dogs In A Fortnight Against Rabies

The BMC stated that World Rabies Day is celebrated on 28 September to not only create awareness but emphasis on the many steps to prevent and control rabies effectively.

Over the last fortnight, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inoculated 3,493 stray dogs against rabies, reported the Times of India. According to the account, officials from the BMC elucidated that they had conducted a drive to inoculate stray dogs from September 28 till October 13. The officials from the civic authority further mentioned that since rabies day is celebrated internationally on September 28, a fortnight of rabies awareness and vaccination was followed by them from September 28 till October 13.

Based on the account, the civic authority in its statement mentioned that through the means of this drive, 3,493 stray dogs were vaccinated. In this drive, two teams comprising veterinary health departments were working that included staff and municipal veterinary officials to catch the dogs. Many NGOs in the area also contributed to this drive.

Dr KA Pathan, the general manager of the veterinary health department elaborated on how the civic authority’s transport department provided vehicles to catch the dogs, highlighted the account.

Officials from the authority added that 28 September is celebrated as World Rabies Day because revered French microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur succumbed that day. His team and he spearheaded the first effective rabies vaccine.
