Based on the data given to the Hindustan Times by the BMC, 10,387 senior citizens have succumbed to coronavirus since the commencement of the pandemic, they also happen to be the age group that has seen the foremost mortality.

In the island city, more than half of the COVID-19 deaths have been registered in the senior citizen's age group, the report states that according to the civic authority’s data, 51% of the aggregate deaths registered since the commencement of the pandemic until October 10, 2021, have been in the age group of 61 to 80.

13.3% of the fatalities were amongst those over the age of 80, with almost 37% of the fatalities amongst the 20-60 age group. Based on the study conducted by the BMC, senior citizens have been the most vulnerable during both the waves of the pandemic. From the 16,149 fatalities registered till October 10, the majority of the fatalities were accorded in the 61 to 70 age group with 27.4%. On the other hand, in the 71-80 age criteria, 23.6% of deaths were registered. Altogether, these two segments constitute 51% of the island city’s fatalities.

The data further elucidates that the majority of those who have succumbed suffered from comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, leading to symptoms, making the recovery ardours.

On the other hand, the mortality numbers amongst children have been the lowest throughout the pandemic, with it being 0.1% in those under 10 years of age and 0.3% in those from 11 to 20 years of age.
