IMD: From June-August, over 400 people died in the country due to extreme weather events; one-third from Maha

The country has seen extreme weather conditions in the last three months of the southwest monsoon. According to the data compiled by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a total of 435 countrymen have died due to extreme weather occurrences.

During monsoon, extreme weather conditions include lightning and heavy rainfall that can lead to floods.  As per the data, due to lightning, 240 people have died. This is more than 50 per cent of the total number of fatalities. 

Maharashtra this year has seen an increase in rainfall, while Mumbai has experienced 43% more rains during this year's monsoon. According to the IMD's data, the state has seen nearly one-third of the total extreme weather events-related death.

109 have died in June, 301 in July, and 25 in August, in three months of monsoon. Earlier, the state officials had said that due to constant rainfall, there was flooding and landslides in several parts of the state, claiming the lives of 213 people in July.

Konkan and western Maharashtra districts of Kolhapur and Sangli had reported damages during that time. IMD is still compiling the figures of the casualties of September month. 

A study was published this year by senior meteorologists, which stated that from 1971-2019, 8,862 people in the country have died due to lighting.
