A violent clash happened in Mumbai’s Goregaon East area during a religious procession on Sunday, April 5. It led to injuries and then arrests. Authorities also responded with a demolition drive targeting alleged illegal constructions linked to the accused.

The incident took place around 5:30 pm near Santosh Nagar Market during a Mariamma Devi procession. A group taking part in the procession was moving through the area with loud devotional music played on a DJ system. Some local residents objected to the loud sound.

It started as an argument but later turned into a violent fight between the two sides. It resulted in damage to the DJ system. After this, the situation worsened, and both groups allegedly used swords and sticks. Three people from the procession were injured and were taken to a hospital in Jogeshwari. Their condition is now reported to be stable.

Police reached the spot soon. A light lathi charge was used to control the crowd and stop the fight. Around 400 police personnel were deployed across the area to prevent further unrest. Senior officers remained at the location to monitor the situation.

Police later identified and arrested 10 family members allegedly involved in the violence. CCTV footage from the area was used to track and confirm the suspects. Police have also set up a temporary camp and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify any additional suspects.

On Monday, April 6, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out a demolition drive in the area. Authorities removed “illegal” structures, including an iron grill and a paan shop. As per reports, these constructions were made by those linked to the accused and were built on public space.

The civic body also acted against alleged encroachments that included expansion of a residential structure and a two-storey public toilet area. Reports suggest that further demolition actions are expected in the coming days.

In a follow-up investigation, police conducted a raid at the accused’s residence and reportedly recovered mephedrone. This led to a separate case being filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
