On Sunday, the state government deposited Rs 15.3cr in the accounts of 306 children who were orphaned by the COVID-19, stated reports.

In June, the Maharashtra government has proclaimed a scheme wherein they would deposit an amount once of Rs 5 lakh in the accounts of those children who have lost their parents to COVID-19. This amount will also entail an interest to the child after they reach 21 years of age.

On Sunday, Yashomati Thakur, the Women and Child Development Minister elaborated that there are almost 600 such children all of whom are set to be veiled through the means of this scheme in the approaching days. Thakur added that steps are being undertaken to assist those children through academics and other welfare steps as well, highlighted reports.

The Fixed Deposit (FD) account will constitute a joint account that will comprise the child’s name and the name of the district women and child development officer. Apart from this, the Maharashtra cabinet, in June had approved a proposal to curate a fixed deposit worth Rs 5 lakh for children who have been orphaned.

In other developments, schools in Mumbai have opened their doors to students from grade 8 to 12, after over a year on October 4, Monday.
