A van ferrying eight kids home from school caught fire near Parel Bus Depot on Tuesday. The children along with the driver luckily managed to escape well on time and no one was harmed in the dangerous incident. Police from Dadar police station have recorded an accidental fire report.

The van was ferrying students from Green Lawns School in Worli. Most of them were residents of Dadar and Parel and studied in Std. V to VIII. When the van stopped to drop off a girl at the spot, all of them stepped out with her after which the driver also got down to shove the kids back into the van. That is when a spark set the vehicle on fire and all of them had a narrow escape.
The driver immediately used the help of the fire extinguishers installed inside the van and tried dousing the fire. As the fire grew wild, the people at the spot informed the police. The Fire Brigade soon arrived and put off the fire.

The incident has raised concerns of parents regarding the safety of children. Under the Central Government’s policy, vehicles with a capacity of 13 or above are only to be run as school buses. It clearly prohibits the use of vans, that are in high demand in Maharashtra as it is hard to find cheap school buses, especially in Mumbai.
