The growth rate in the city of Mumbai in the past one week has come down to 0.97 per cent and the projected doubling rate has increased to 72 days.
The BMC has also asserted that the daily testing figure has touched 11,643 on July 28, which is the highest till date. Of these, only 1,118 tested positive for the coronavirus. Moreover, 55 per cent of the people were tested using the antigen kits which showed a positivity rate of 3 per cent. The BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had earlier notified the public that the doubling rate in the city happens to be 68 days, which has now increased to 72 days. On Tuesday, 55 deaths were clocked due to the coronavirus which took the toll to 6,187.
This comes as a piece of good news for the city as the widening gap between the number of tests conducted and the positive cases can be attributed to many factors, namely, increased testing across the community. Since July 3, the BMC had permitted everyone to conduct testing for the coronavirus without a prescription from the medical practitioner. This helped increase the number of tests that were being conducted in Mumbai. With the scope of testing now extended from targeted testing of symptomatic and high-risk contacts to the general population, some experts believe that this has resulted in a positive outcome.
On Wednesday, July 29, the death toll in Maharashtra rose to 14,463 after 298 patients succumbed to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The case fatality rate in the state stands at 3.61 per cent which is way above the country's 2.23 per cent. Meanwhile, 7,478 patients were discharged after recovery from the disease in the same period, taking the number of recovered cases to 2,39,755. The recovery rate in Maharashtra is now 59.84 per cent, as against the nation's 64.51 per cent.
