In the midst of the COVID-19 restrictions in the state due to the spike in the cases of coronavirus, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had announced financial assistance for the hawkers.

However, the hawker’s union have stated that the financial assistance offered was too little. In addition, the hawkers have sought more clarity on the state government’s offer.

According to reports, CM Thackeray had said that with the new curbs being implemented to break the chain of transmission, the state of Maharashtra is to spend at least INR 5,200 crore on providing financial assistance to the poor working class. Moreover, the state will provide INR 1,500 to each hawker who is registered with the authorities and whose account number is with a bank under the PM SVANidhi Yojana. In addition, the CM asserted that at least five lakh hawkers in the state will benefit under the scheme.

Meanwhile, CM Thackeray while announcing financial aid for the poorer sections of the society mentioned that 3 kg wheat and 2 kg rice will be provided at no cost, under the food security scheme. Moreover, the Shiva Bhojan Thali will be provided free of cost for the next month

Furthermore, additional benefits were announced for the destitute, widows and the disabled, under which about 35 lakh beneficiaries can make the most of five government-run schemes like Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana, Shravanbal and Centrally Sponsored Indira Gandhi National Old Age Retirement Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Retirement Pension, and Indira Gandhi National Disability Retirement Scheme. As per the revised policy, people will be given financial assistance of INR 1,000 each for two months.
