Mumbai Rains Update: 1 died after tree collapses in Malad; waterlogging leads to heavy traffic

It has been raining heavily since morning in the suburbs and across the city. This has resulted in traffic jams disrupting commute of citizens at peak hours.

As monsoon commences in Mumbai, incident of building and trees collapse have also been reported. Such an accident has come to light this morning, June 28, after a tree fell in the private compound of the Maweledar Wadi area of Malad West in Mumbai causing death of a 38-year-old man. The name of the deceased youth is Kaushal Mahendra Doshi, who was crushed under a tree.

Heavy rains have lashed Goregaon, Vile parle, Lower Parle and Andheri. Owing to this, there is waterlogging and traffic jams at several parts of the city, which has disrupted the commute of citizens during peak hours.

According to information received, a peepal tree about 35 feet tall and four feet wide fell at Manibhai Munji Chal in Maweledar Wadi area of Malad West. This took place when Kaushal had gone to the toilet in the chawl. Kaushal died on the spot as the heavy part of the tree fell on his head.

On the other hand, as heavy rains lashed in Mumbai over weekend, the Met office on June 26 reported that at least 6 people died in two days in Mumbai. 

IMD issued an alert for moderate to heavy rainfall is likely over the coastal districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in the next 3-4 hours.

Rains took place in Mumbai throughout the day on Tuesday, June 27. However, no heavy rain was recorded from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Colaba recorded 11 mm of rain while Santa Cruz recorded 31.8 mm of rain. 23.4 mm of rain was recorded between 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm. 21.2 mm rainfall was recorded at Dahanu centre.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 8 am to 6 pm, the city recorded 3.06 mm of rain, while the eastern suburbs recorded 23.60 mm and the western suburbs 22.11 mm.
