Heavy vehicles have been banned from entering Mumbai from the Dahisar toll plaza during the morning rush hour to ease the increasing traffic congestion in Mumbai. The Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) traffic police imposed the ban on Tuesday, February 11. The ban will be in effect from 8 am to 11:30 am.
It will impact trucks, trailers, multi-axle vehicles and all types of inter-state and inter-district private buses carrying passengers. The ban will also apply to heavy vehicles coming from the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and Thane.
The Mumbai traffic police had also imposed a similar ban in June 2022. At that time, heavy vehicles were banned from Mumbai roads during the morning and evening rush hours, including those originating within and outside Mumbai. However, they were unable to enforce the ban.
Therefore, to improve effectiveness, the Mumbai traffic police has urged the MBVV traffic police to stop the southbound heavy vehicles at Dahisar itself from entering.
Meanwhile, the MBVV traffic police agreed that there was a virtual gridlock at the Dahisar toll plaza during rush hour. Where vehicles were queueing up on the Western Express Highway, causing traffic jams. Even though the toll is only for heavy vehicles, four-wheelers also got stuck as both the vehicles were in the same lane.
“This caused inconvenience and obstruction to other small vehicles, emergency service vehicles, ambulances, VIP convoys, etc. which is likely to create a law and order situation,” said Suhas Bavche, Deputy Commissioner of Police, MBVV Headquarters.
It is pertinent to note that last week, state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik directed officials to introduce separate lanes for heavy vehicles and four-wheelers at the Dahisar toll plaza to ease congestion. His directive came after his own convoy experienced a 10-15 minute delay due to long queues at the toll naka.
