The Maharashtra state cabinet has authorised a proposal to fill 300 seats for officers, including technical personnel, and 1,700 constable positions in the jails.

It was approved to address the shortage of staff in the jails. Moreover, there has been overcrowding of inmates. As a result, they live in substandard circumstances in jail. Therefore, with this hiring, it aims to improve the condition of jails.

According to the model prison manual, the nine central prisons in the state should each have a senior superintendent. But, none of the jails do at the moment. Additionally, the ratio of constables to undertrials or prisoners should be one for every six. However, there are typically between 21 and 28 of them per constable.

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission will hire jailers and deputy superintendents. Promotions for senior superintendents, deputy IGs, and superintendents will be announced. There are also plans to hire Indian Police Service officers as senior superintendents.

It will take eight months to hire new employees. The training session will last another year. Once the new employees have been employed and trained, there will be enough personnel to staff the four new jails. These jails are now being constructed in Yerwada, Turbhe, Palghar, and Ahmednagar.

According to reports, the central jail can only hold 1,500 inmates. Inside, though, there are currently 3,500 to 5,000 people. The amenities in correctional facilities and jails are also in subpar condition. Currently, around 39,000 offenders are housed in Maharashtra's jails, compared to the approved capacity of 24,722 inmates.
