While discussions regarding the exorbitant electricity bills have become ongoing, MLA Hitendra Thakur has now come forward and stated that he will not pay the electricity bills.

Thakur had earlier received an electricity bill of five and a half lakhs from Vasai. The MLA has, therefore, refused to pay and at the same time has appealed to the people to not give in to the exorbitant bills.

He further added that the colleges and schools have been closed from March 22. Therefore, it is not appropriate to have such an exorbitant bill if the educational institutions have not resumed. At the same time, the MLA said that the electricity bills of his houses have also come up significantly.

Earlier, several consumers of Tata Power, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML), the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking, and the State-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL), took to social media demanding an answer for the exorbitant amounts. In some cases, the bills were for more than ₹10,000. The city of Mumbai has nearly 32 lakh residential power consumers and around eight lakh commercial consumers.

However, the companies in response have stated that the high electricity bills are mostly because power utilities have been able to check meter readings in June after over two months. Meter readings had been discontinued since March 22, according to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) directive. Instead, during the lockdown, the people were billed based on their average consumption of December, January and February.
