One of the crucial routes for road transport in Mumbai, Sion flyover will be repaired and while it is being repaired, the route will be closed down for traffic. However, the BKC-Chunabhatti connector is yet to be inaugurated for public use and thus, Sion flyover repair works will begin only after the newly-built Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)–Chunabhatti connector is opened for motorists, said an official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

If the Sion flyover is shut down prior to the inception of the BKC-Chunabhatti connector, it is evident that the route will witness heavy traffic daily.

Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay) in its report said that the flyover is in a bad condition and requires immediate attention and repair work. IIT-Bombay had previously conducted the structural audit of various bridges including the Sion bridge.

However, the Traffic Department has not approved the closure of Sion flyover for repairs prior to the opening of Chunabhatti-BKC connector, fearing traffic congestion.
