According to the latest reports, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey has asked hawkers to not operate within 100 meters of entry as well as exit points of railway stations in the city. This has been done to enable passenger movement.

Based on accounts, Pandey conducted a meeting on Tuesday, March 15, with the hawkers’ unions as well as shop associates on the problem of encroachment. Pandey took to Twitter to elaborate on how he met the hawkers’ union and shop association about the problem of encroachment.

The police commissioner added that it seemed the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 rules have not been finalized.

Therefore, the Mumbai Police Chief said they will work towards this. He added that the unions agreed to keep railway station exit free of hawkers. 

On the other hand, Syed Haider Imam, general secretary of the hawker’s union was quoted in an account by the Times of India elaborating on how they have agreed to adjust. However, he demanded that an alternative location should be provided to them where they can sell their products and thus earn a livelihood.

In other developments, the Mumbai Traffic Police has also taken up to align auto and taxi at railway stations. The authority is awaiting feedback to see if the initiative has made a difference.
