The Mumbai Fire Brigade has informed RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh that there have been a total of 48,434 fire incidents in Mumbai in the last 10 years between 2008 to 2018.
RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh had filed an RTI application with the Mumbai Fire Brigade seeking information on the number of fire incidents in Mumbai from 2008 to 2018. Moreover, information was also sought on how many skyscrapers / residential buildings / commercial buildings and slums have caught fire. Besides, what is the reason behind it? How many people have died in a fire accident? Also, how much property has been damaged?

Regarding this information, Public Information Officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade and Divisional Fire Officer S.D. Sawant gave it to Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh under the Right to Information Act-2005.
A fire broke out in 1,568 skyscrapers. Also, 8,737 residents of the building have caught fire. Nearly, 3, 833 commercial buildings have caught fire, while 3, 151 slums have witnessed fire incidents. The cause of most incidents, which is about 32, 516 fires is reported to be short circuit.
As many as 1,116 fires have started due to gas cylinder leakage. In addition, 11, 889 fire incidents have been reported to various other reasons.
As per the RTI information, property damage to the tune of INR 89,04,86,102 has occurred in these fire incidents.
