On Wednesday, February 17, the Shiv Sena stated that the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state is alarming and warned that the Maharashtra government spearheaded Uddhav Thackeray would be forced to take some strict decisions including a lockdown to curb the rise in infections.

Moreover, in its party mouthpiece Saamana, the Shiv Sena in an editorial expressed displeasure over people violating coronavirus pandemic guidelines. In addition, the cabinet also agreed to impose strict restrictions for a week, if necessary, by taking measures such as taking action against those who do not wear masks and limiting attendance at functions to keep the situation from spiralling out of control.

Along with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Education Minister Varshan Gaikwad and other ministers also expressed concern over the disorderly conduct and overcrowding, especially in Mumbai locals. As an urgent measure, the administration was directed to curb the unrestrained crowds at various ceremonies, restrict attendance and take action against those who do not wear masks. Even after that, the number of patients was not controlled due to which the cabinet has agreed to impose some more stringent restrictions.

The authorities further hinted at the possibility of “imposition of local lockdown measures” to control the occurrence of rising cases and insisted on starting the drive for the elderly in the ward at the earliest. Meanwhile, in a press conference in Aurangabad, the state's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar pointed out that people have started avoiding wear face masks while in public places which could lead to serious consequences.
