
The Centre has granted administrative approval to establish a modern, international-standard wholesale fish market at Marol), Mumbai, at a cost of INR 138 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana on the project, Nitesh Rane said he had maintained close coordination with the Centre, the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), and other relevant authorities to ensure timely sanction and smooth fund disbursement.
He added, “Establishing an international-standard wholesale fish market in a metropolitan city like Mumbai was the need of the hour. This project will not only streamline trade but also create employment opportunities and provide stability to thousands of fisherfolk and associated stakeholders. It marks a significant step toward strengthening Maharashtra’s Blue Economy.”
The Marol fish market is expected to ease pressure on existing markets in Mumbai and nearby areas by providing a planned, hygienic, and technologically advanced trading hub. Improved infrastructure will support exporters with better handling and logistics, contributing to higher-quality marine exports from the state.
To ensure timely implementation, the State Government will establish an independent monitoring and supervision mechanism, with all procedures carried out in line with Central Government guidelines.
