Amid the rise in the number of cases in the Kalyan-Dombivli region, the civic authority has decided to curb down the movement of people outside their homes, except in case of medical emergencies. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has banned people from venturing out of their homes even to buy groceries.

On Saturday, three news cases were reported from the Kalyan-Dombivli region, taking the tally in this region to 117 along with three deaths. As of now, KDMC has declared 10 Kalyan-Dombivli localities as hotspots whereas 20 of the 122 wards as affected areas.

The civic body has warned the people that if any customer is seen outside a shop, then the shopkeeper will be facing action for violating the order. In the meantime, the civic body has directed all the grocers and vegetable vendors in the area to deliver directly at home. The civic officials have already provided them with ward-wise numbers and have also assured that they will find volunteers for home delivery too.

The KDMC has also issued helpline numbers for senior citizens and disabled residents. The civic body has assured that KDMC staff themselves will deliver at their doorstep and accept cash payment.

However, the assurance from the civic body is not enough for the small grocers and vegetable vendors. Talking to TOI, a shopkeeper from Tilak Chowk in Kalyan said that due to the pandemic, there is already a shortage of staff in place. He added that with this shutdown order, how will his shop which has only one or two helpers, be able to take orders on the phone and deliver them to homes.

Previously, KDMC had launched an application for home delivery of essentials where people can locate shops near their residence and place an order by phone or WhatsApp. The municipal corporation has appealed to the Kalyan-Dombivli residents to use the app.
