After a massive fire broke out at Kamala Mills on December 29, 2017, BMC has tightened the investigation of all pubs, restaurants, malls, and clubs in Mumbai by strictly taking action against the unauthorised constructions. In the list of demolitions, around 314 pubs, restaurant-bars, and clubs have been mentioned and officials from the BMC have been asked to take action.
Upon pressure from the government and the people, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta ordered special investigations for all the departments in Mumbai to conduct checks across pubs, hookah parlours and restaurants in many areas of the city. Further, actions were also taken against illegal constructions in Kamala Mills, Raghuvanshi mill, Todi Mill compound, against unauthorised places to function.
Adding to the list were gymkhanas, where demolitions and investigations were seen at Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG), Parsi Gymkhana, Islam Gymkhana and many others. Overall, around 624 pubs, restaurant bars, and gymkhanas were examined in the city and around 314 unauthorised constructions have been found and action has been accordingly.
Even after prior investigations, it was found that many pubs and eateries did not follow the safety measures. Several fire extinguishers at the locations were found to have run out of expiry date and not replaced, and many did not have the mandatory fire exit areas. This along with the illegal documents eventually led to the locations being sealed.
