The much-awaited monsoon has arrived and with this, the city fears flooding as past experiences of the same during the monsoon season has raised concerns for the civic bodies, both in Mumbai and the twin cities of Kalyan and Dombivli.
Keeping the same in mind, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has taken precautionary steps by installing the flood sensors across a few spots in the city where flooding has been noted over the years.
It is being said that the move taken this year will assist the civic body whereby the sensors will send an alert to the control room. Upon receiving the same, necessary steps will be taken by the concerned teams to help the citizens in the area.
A report was published regarding the same in the Hindustan Times which quoted an officer from the KDMC who said, “In 2019 and 2021, we witnessed major flooding in different parts of the twin cities, thus making it mandatory to have a warning system in place. These sensors will work promptly and alert well in time. Earlier, ward-level officers used to keep a tab on such flood-prone areas and informed the residents. These sensors will work prior to the flooding based on the level of water and then send an alert.”
“The sensors will keep checking the water level of the river. As the water level keeps rising, an alert will be sent to the smart city control room on a regular basis. The water level information will also be displayed on the smart display board. Information will be passed on through loudspeaker announcements at 28 different locations,” the officer added.
Flooding has affected citizens across several areas in KDMC and officials had to conduct rescue operations at Suyog Nagar, Shastri Nagar chawls, Varap, Shahad, Kamba and Mharal villages, Kamba village, etc. Officials had to take immediate decisions to manage the crisis and it is believed that the sensors will help in such crisis.
A review meeting was also conducted recently with officials from several departments of the KDMC, MSEDCL, MIDC and other bodies. Preparation work ahead of the monsoon was discussed and authorities were instructed to ensure all the nullahs were cleaned and no water logging was reported during the monsoon. Fire department was also informed to remain alert during the emergency. Necessary steps and measures have also been planned to manage crisis in low-lying areas. Equipment and manpower has been arranged to tackle monsoon related incidents this year.
