Leopard Cub Found In Aarey, Search For Mother Begins

On Tuesday, a leopard cub was found near the site of the former metro car shed in the Aarey milk colony. The cub was then rescued from Aarey’s Unit 22. The cub has undergone a medical examination and efforts are underway to trace its mother, state reports. He will be kept in the same place to see if the mother takes him and attempts to reunite them are currently underworks.

A two-month-old leopard cub was found by residents in the area of the former Metro car shed in the Aarey milk colony on Tuesday evening. Residents were alerted by the barking of the dogs. They then inspected the area where the metro car shed will be located on the way to the Tapeshwar Temple. It is then that they saw the cub. Forest department officials, local police and volunteers were later informed.

Forest officials have asked locals to remain vigilant for a few days because the mother is expected to be in search of the cub in the same location. A veterinarian has also been asked to examine the calf. The calf will be moved from its original location and taken to a rescue centre if it needs medical help.

Authorities have installed cameras at the scene to monitor the cub’s movements and ensure that it isn’t attacked by any animal. Officials aren’t denying that the cub was left there by the mother, mention accounts.

Earlier this year, leopard cubs were found in a deserted warehouse in Powai. At first, it seemed that his mother had abandoned him, however, surveillance cameras in the area revealed that the mother had left the cub there for safety. The mother had been sitting there all day, later she went out hunting and returned to take care of the cub. The footage showed that she was visiting the cub regularly.

Meanwhile, a leopard had entered a house in Unit 31, just two days after the first attack on a child in a unit in the Aarey area on Sunday. Therefore, for the safety of the citizens, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park had been encouraged to take appropriate action, for which the demand was gaining momentum. Some reports say that one night a leopard had broken into a house in Unit 31 in search of prey. Earlier, a woman was also injured in a leopard attack and thus, fear has spread in the area after two people were attacked within a month.

Apart from attacks, leopards have often been observed nearby human settlements. Forests have been destroyed due to an increase in construction in the Aarey area. As a result, wild animals are invading human settlements. Environmentalists have been demanding actions against unauthorized constructions.
