Auto-wallahs in Mumbai are up for a long ride as they pack their bags for their hometowns and leave Mumbai for their respective cities in their autos. The Indore stretch of Agra-Mumbai highway looks like a road from pre-lockdown Mumbai as the auto drivers race their way to their homes, mostly in UP and Bihar. According to sources, more than 8,000 of them have loaded their autos with all the essentials as they make way for the long 1,400 km journey most likely to not return anytime soon.

There has been news cropping up of the migrant workers for months now. The daily wage labourers have been the worst affected considering their complete loss of income. Therefore, these migrant workers who have been working in Mumbai are left with no choice but to leave for home as living in Mumbai would mean being reduced to beggars for them.

Over 2.5 lakh auto-rickshaws operate in Mumbai. Half of them are driven around by migrant workers. Grounded in the extended lockdown with no work or food, most of them were left with no option but to leave for their hometowns in search for solace.

The workers had earlier alleged that all talk of providing food and medicines were nothing but propaganda. Only people belonging to the ruling party benefitted from it. The authowallahs grouse which is headed by Shashank Rao, leader of the Autorickshaw Chalak Malak Sanghatana Sanyukt Kruti Samiti in Mumbai, has stated that the ruling party has done nothing to provide for the migrant workers. He further added that the Samiti had earlier distributed 15 kilos worth of groceries to the drivers living in Mumbai. Furthermore, Rao spoke of his worries stating that the drivers could face legal problems on their way to their hometowns adding that the Samiti plans on holding massive agitations once the lockdown period is over.
