TikTok is back. In a boost for TikTok users across the country, the application has made its way back on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The app was back on the digital distribution service platforms after the Madras High Court on April 24 lifted the ban on the social media platform in the country.
Earlier, the High Court had called a ban on TikTok on April 3, owing to reports of pornographic content being accessible to minors on the platform. After which, Google Play Store and Apple App Store pulled down the app.
Prior to this, the Supreme Court had passed an order to act upon the plea, stating that the ban on the app would be lifted if Madras HC did not pass an interim order by April 24. After which, Madras HC lifted the ban and the bench pointed out that India doesn’t have legislation like the US COPPA to protect children in cyberspace.
TikTok had filed a counter affidavit in the Madras HC and clarified that they would ensure content moderation and will not allow uploading of obscene and vulgar content.
TikTok, owned by a Chinese company named ByteDance, was represented by senior lawyer Isaac Mohanlal.
