A day after Holi, a complete lockdown in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district has been imposed. It will begin from today, March 30, to curb the spread of coronavirus infections. The lockdown will remain in effect till April 8, 2021.

According to officials, only essential services will be allowed during this period, officials said.

The district administration decided to impose the lockdown after Aurangabad reported nearly 1,700 new COVID-19 cases in the past couple of days.

Meanwhile, the state is observing a night curfew, which was imposed on March 28. During the night curfew, all malls, gardens, beaches, cinema halls etc. will remain closed between 8 pm and 7 am.

Moreover, the Maharashtra government had decided to extend the coronavirus-related restrictions across the state till April 15.

Apart from that, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, over the last many weeks, has been asking the citizens to follow the norms diligently and support the government in fighting the novel virus.

He also stated that the officials have been informed about the upcoming lockdown which has been planned to curb the spread. He added that the government is making sure that the lockdown has minimum impact on the economy and has asked the respective local bodies to prepare for the same.

Maharashtra on Monday, March 29, added 31,643 fresh infections, taking the overall tally to 27,45,518, the state health department said.

The state of Maharashtra, which is worst hit by the pandemic, contributes the highest number of cases among the eight states. It accounted for 84.5 per cent of the total cases posted by India. India is experiencing the second wave of coronavirus and 68,020 fresh cases were recorded in India in a day.

Maharashtra on Sunday had reported the highest daily rise of 40,414 COVID-19 cases, followed by 3,082 in Karnataka, 2,870 in Punjab, 2,276 in Madhya Pradesh, 2,270 in Gujarat, 2,216 in Kerala, 2,194 in Tamil Nadu and 2,153 in Chhattisgarh, the ministry said.
