On Wednesday, the Maharashtra cabinet approved a Rs 3,200cr Konkan disaster management program, in accordance to which many mitigations steps will be undertaken to confront disasters in the area, highlighted reports.

For the past two years, three Konkan districts that include Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have borne the brunt of two cyclones, incessant rains that led to landslides, amongst other calamities. Through this program, a detailed plan will be drafted in these regions for capacity building. Some constitutes of this program will include, early warning system and an enhanced preparedness to face natural calamities.

From the allocated Rs 3,200cr, from the state disaster mitigation fund, Rs 2,000cr will be spent, the remaining will be allocated in the next four years as part of the state budget. In addition to this, there are also proposals to move the utilities underground in order to ensure that they aren’t harmed. Apart from this, building strong infrastructure in the area is also part of the scheme.

An official, according to a report by the Times of India, stated that the region faces the wrath of natural disasters frequently, and thus, this scheme will enable them to handle the situation better. The aim is to curtail damage, ameliorate response time, prevent loss of life and reduce harm to important infrastructure.
