In a significant relief to Mumbaikars, there will be a reduction in electricity tariffs in a phased manner.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, June 25, the state government will reduce power tariffs by 26 per cent over the next five years.

In a post shared on June 25 via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Fadnavis said the tariff cut will begin with an initial 10 per cent reduction in the first year, marking a first in Maharashtra’s history. Notably, Fadnavis also serves as the state’s Energy Minister.

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) approved this proposal by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDL) to reduce the power tariffs.

Reduction in electricity rates

Electricity rates will be reduced by 10 percent in the first year itself and a total reduction of 26 percent will be made in the next five years.

During the previous government, especially during the tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, there was dissatisfaction among the citizens due to the increase in electricity bills after COVID-19. In this background, it has now been decided to reduce these rates.

Previously, petitions used to be filed for tariff hikes of around 10%, but this time a petition was filed for a reduction -- benefitting domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers alike, Fadnavis added.

Who will benefit?

The proportion of people using less than 100 units of electricity in the state is 70%. The more substantial relief has been granted to residential users consuming less than 100 units of electricity. MSEDL supplies electricity across Maharashtra, barring Mumbai. In Mumbai, electricity distribution is handled by BEST, Tata Power, and Adani Electricity.
