In a significant development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday, December 1, announced that the e-office system will be started at all government offices in the state from April 1 next year.

This decision has been taken so that work speeds up and becomes "paperless".

Shinde made the announcement after meeting V Srinivas, secretary of the central administrative reforms and public grievances department.

Once the e-office system is in place, officials will be able to look at government files and documents on their mobile phones, a statement from the Chief Minister's office (CMO) said.

Currently, files going to the Chief Minister go through eight stages of clearances which results in delays in decision making. This will now be reduced to four stages.

The state will also increase the number of online services. Currently around 450 services are being offered online.

Shinde also said that an online system will be set up to redress the public grievances received by the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. The progress will be tracked digitally.

The state has also decided that different government departments and districts will compete for good governance rankings.

This aims to increase the competition between departments and improve the quality of services being offered to the public.

It is pertinent to note that earlier in October, the Government of India began a special campaign to make Indian Railways 100% paperless in an effort to decrease paper waste.
