Amid a significant rise in the coronavirus cases, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday, April 19, announced to activate 25 COVID-19 dedicated hospitals.

This development took place under the Medical Education and Research department, said Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan while confirming the statement.

There are 5,000 beds for COVID-19 patients, more than 2,000 ventilators, 62 liquid medical oxygen and 37 PSA plants. Some 2,000 jumbo and 6,000 small oxygen cylinders have been kept ready by the department in case of emergency, he added.

It is pertinent to note that this announcement came a day after the state, on Tuesday, April 18, reported nearly 1,000 fresh cases and six deaths. With this, Maharashtra saw over 50 per cent spike within 24 hours as a day earlier, on Monday, April 17, the state added 505 cases and zero fatalities.

Therefore, the minister has appealed doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to use in the hospitals during duty hours. Moreover, the elderly and comorbidities patients have also been advised to wear masks in public places and crowded areas.

The hospitals conducted mock drills on April 10 and 11, the minister said. They can conduct 30,000 tests in a day if required, Mahajan added.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made masks mandatory for all the staffers in all civic-run hospitals.
