The Maharashtra government is likely to start a Ro-Ro service from Mumbai to Goa to ease the travel hassle during Ganeshotsav. Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane made the announcement in this regard.
Ganeshotsav is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm in Konkan. A large number of Konkan residents living in Mumbai, Thane, Mira Bhayandar and Navi Mumbai are seen visiting Konkan. Although the state government has deployed additional state transport buses during the festive season, the demand for more travel options remains.
To address this recurring problem, the government has decided to start a Ro-Ro boat service. This will allow passengers to travel in their own vehicles. The Ro-Ro service will allow passengers to board the ship at Mazgaon Dock in Mumbai and disembark at Devgad in Sindhudurg in four and a half hours. The service will also be extended to Goa and the total travel time is about six to six and a half hours.
Rane also mentioned that the M2M boat service model is inspired by the Ro-Ro service run by entrepreneur Vivek Jadhav. "This initiative will provide much-needed relief to thousands of Konkan residents and improve the overall travel experience during Ganesh Chaturthi," he added.
