The state government looks to spend a major proportion of the clean air funding attained through the 15th Finance Commission (FC) on electrifying public transport in its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2021, reported the Hindustan Times.

Through the policy, nearly 1,46,000 new battery-operated electric vehicles are hoped to be bought on Maharashtra’s road by 2025. This is estimated to entail nearly 10 per cent of all the new motors registration by the said duration.

According to the report, Maharashtra has been accorded an aggregate corpus of INR 2981 crore. This was recommended at the 15th FC that was undertaken to tackle air pollution in Maharashtra. The funds are to be used by the end of the 2026 financial year.

From the INR 2773 crore that the Maharashtra government looks to spend, a clean INR 2218 crore or 80 per cent worth of expenditure is proposed to be undertaken on the EV Policy. Majorly, the focus is anticipated to be on bus fleets.

Based on the account, the remaining INR 555 crore will be spent on other measures that include developing Maharashtra’s air quality monitoring network at 3 per cent, putting in place dust control measures at 8 per cent, as well as regulating construction at 4 per cent, industries at 2 per cent, bakeries and crematoria at 3 per cent.
