Considering that BEST officials have moved from coal-based thermal energy to solar in order to charge its fleet of 386 buses, electric bus rides is now slated to be running on 100% green energy, reported the Times of India. The account went on to elucidate that, officials highlighted how usually BEST attains electricity for its consumers through Tata Power that is sourced from coal-based thermal plants. This is, however, going to undergo transformation since solar power will be attained from the grid, some of which will be made through its own customers who chose photovoltaic solar panels, for its fleet.

In addition to this, there also persists a 40% subsidy for the installation of solar rooftops in buildings. The BEST is sufficing to 580KWp (Kilowatts peak) of solar power ability in Mumbai with financial help from the Union. The solar energy made by customers is changed to the grid in light of which they reap the advantages in the electricity bills they receive on a monthly basis.

The report quoted Lokesh Chandra, BEST General Manager who elucidated on how they have undertaken the decision to utilize only solar energy with the possibility of utilizing solar-wind or hydro-based energy in the future to run the buses. Moreover, by 2027, the undertaking looks to ensure the 100% electrification of its fleet.

The narrative also mentions that based on sources in the energy department, solar power could be acquired at economical rates in contrast to thermal power. Moreover, there was a demand for making further renewables in Maharashtra in the next five years. Based on an approximate, Maharashtra is looking to make an aggregate of 17,360MW of solar energy in the coming five years.
