On Monday, December 13, Maharashtra cabinet minister, Aaditya Thackeray handed over the “Majhi Vasundhara” curriculum to state school education minister Varsha Gaikwad. Taking to Twitter, Thackeray mentioned that the curriculum was developed with the assistance of UNICEF.

Apart from the UNICEF, environment experts with the Environment Department have also designed the curriculum. The syllabus looks to go beyond what is taught within the four walls of the classroom and undertake a more practical approach.

Further, he added that this is being undertaken to create awareness about climate change. They hope to instil responsibility towards the plant primary school education onwards. The curriculum will be applicable for grade 1-8 students.

As part of the syllabus, subjects included entail, Biodiversity Conservation, Solid Waste Management, Water Resources Management, Energy, Air, Pollution and Climate Change. Thackeray said, “The coursework comprises activity-based lessons that go beyond classroom learning.”

Thackeray added, “Introducing this curriculum is our attempt at getting the next generation to start with a green thumb and be proactively involved in a pro-earth lifestyle.”

Thackeray hopes that giving over the green syllabus to the school education department will be a crucial step towards green earth. Thackeray believes that climate change will impact the people of India more than any others since India has a dense population. "Need of the time is that political parties make climate change their election agenda", remarked Thackeray.

On the other hand, earlier last week, Gaikwad declared that the exam fee for state board exams 2021-22 has been waived off for those students who have lost their parents to the coronavirus pandemic.
