Days after the Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray announced a total of INR 5,476 crores financial aid for several beneficiaries which include vendors, auto-rickshaw drivers, house helps, construction workers, etc, autorickshaw drivers’ union leader said that this kind of assistance is an insult.

While announcing stricter lockdown-like restrictions on Tuesday, April 13, CM Thackeray said that a sum of INR 1,500 each will be given to 12 lakh rickshaw owners with valid permits. The financial assistance will be limited to a month and will be one-time.

The leader of the biggest union, Mumbai’s Autorickshawmen’s Union said that the relief package provided by the government comes to INR 100 per day, which is a pittance and an insult to the autorickshaw drivers, who serve society.

According to reports, nearly 4,000 autos have been confiscated for defaulting on repayments.

Moreover, they also have warned that they will take to the streets as a part of agitation post-lockdown if their demands are not met. In addition, they also petitioned the government for higher aid and waiver of interest on loan EMIs of several drivers.

Meanwhile, the bureaucrat said that adequate care has been taken to ensure that poor people do not suffer owing to the loss of daily wages. In the second wave of COVID-19, thousands of people have been affected. The CM is keen people do not suffer and are provided adequate financial assistance, an official said.
