Maharashtra's Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Thursday inaugurated the deployment of 50 segways at Mumbai's Marine Drive. This deployment is seen as an augmentation of the police's safety and security preparedness.

"Although the deployment will begin with 10 'segways' at Worli, five at Nariman Point, we eventually plan to deploy these latest self-balancing electric scooters at Bandra, Juhu and Versova as well,"  Deshmukh informed while stating that the home Ministry was keen on the modernisation of the police force in Maharashtra.

The police personnel who operate these segways will have a public address system attached to their masks to communicate with people. "Apart from the safety and security in these times of the coronavirus pandemic, they will also monitor social distancing," Deshmukh said.

The state Home Minister also expressed grief over the demise of 35 police personnel who were frontline in the fight against coronavirus. The government was creating specialised facilities for police personnel who test positive, he said while adding that the ex-gratia will be provided to the families of personnel who have succumbed to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Deshmukh informed that the Maharashtra government has booked a few people responsible for the criminal offence in Jalgaon after a body of 82-year-old missing COVID-19 patient was recovered was the toilet.

"We've taken a serious note of this incident. Few have already been booked for this criminal offence. Stern action is being taken against the people responsible for this inhuman act and the local police are pursuing an inquiry in the matter to get to the root of it and nab all those responsible," he said.

On Wednesday, the dead body of an 82-year-old COVID-19 patient was found inside the toilet of a hospital in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. The 82-year-old woman from Bhusawal was getting treatment for COVID-19 in Jalgaon Civil hospital and she went missing for nearly eight days.
