The Maharashtra government has decided to make permits compulsory for e-rickshaws and e-bikes operating as passenger transport vehicles. The announcement was made on Friday, March 13, by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik in response to the sharp rise in the number of electric vehicles across the state.
According to the minister, e-rickshaws and e-bikes providing passenger services will now have to be officially registered with the Motor Vehicles Department and obtain valid permits before operating. The step is aimed at ensuring that electric passenger vehicles follow the same regulatory framework as conventional auto-rickshaws and taxis.
In the past two days, the state government had temporarily halted the process of issuing new permits for auto-rickshaws and taxis. With the latest decision, authorities are working to bring electric passenger vehicles under a formal permit system to maintain consistency in regulations.
Officials say the move is intended to improve transparency in the passenger transport sector and reduce irregular practices.
Meanwhile, the Transport Department is also working on introducing a single-window system for permit applications. This system will allow applicants to submit forms, verify documents, and receive approvals through a single platform, making the process faster and more convenient.
