On Tuesday, December 28, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Patil mentioned that the state looks to initiate the Dial 112 initiative from January 26, onwards, reports stated. The aim of the project is to initiate one emergency number throughout Maharashtra.

By means of this initiative, technology will be fully utilized to enable quick response in cases of emergency. The government plans to attain an emergency response time of 8 minutes in cities and 15-18 minutes in the hinterland after the revamp.

As part of the 112 project, control rooms are also set to be upgraded. They look to streamline the emergency response by amalgamating the fire brigade, police and ambulance. This drive is part of the Central home ministry's attempt to have a central emergency number for the whole country, similar to that of the USA.

Apart from this, Patil also mentioned that the state government looks to commence 75 new police stations to upgrade as well as strengthen the police network in Maharashtra. He added that the state is in the midst of filling up the vacant posts in the police department.

Based on accounts, Patil elaborated on how there exist 50,000 vacant posts and they will initiate a proposal in the cabinet to ensure that the seats are filled.
