In a shocking incident, four teenage boys drowned in the Arabian sea off Kelwa beach in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Thursday afternoon, March 3.

The incident took place around 1 pm, an official said, adding that while one of the deceased was a resident of Kelwa, three others were his friends from Nashik.

The deceased have been identified as Atharva Nakare (13), Krishna Shelar, Deepak Wadkate and Om Vispute (all were of 17), stated police official. Fortunately, one of the boys from the group, identified as 17-year-old Abhilekh Deore from Nashik, was rescued by police.

All of them decided to go to the beach for a picnic after they met Nakare, who was a resident of Devicha Pada in Kelva road. During the time of high tide, the boys decided to swim ashore.

According to eyewitnesses, on Thursday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy was playing in the water along with three of his friends, all of them from Palghar. While they were swimming, Nakare, a student of Class 8 studying in Adarsh Vidya Mandir in Kelwa, started drowning. When the boys screamed for help, four students, who were on a school trip from Nashik, jumped in the water to save the boy.

Officials said that his friends tried to rescue him, but they drowned in the sea along with him during high tide. Moreover, after being alerted to the police and fire brigade, the local horse cart pullers then conducted a search operation.

Police officials mentioned that the three deceased children from Nashik were studying in Class 11 (science) at Brahma Valley college.

The bodies of four victims were later recovered and sent to a primary health care centre at Mahim, he said.

A case of accidental death has been registered.
