
The agreement was signed between Maharashtra Maritime Board CEO Pradeep P. and Hyke AS Chairman Charles Pembroke Beers.
Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Lokesh Chandra, Principal Secretary Dr Srikar Pardeshi, Principal Advisor Kaustubh Dhavse, Norwegian Honorary Consul General Monica Nagelgaard, and Sweden’s Consul General Sven Osterberg were among those present at the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Fadnavis said the state government is working towards building a sustainable and environment-friendly water transport system to meet the growing transportation needs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
He said the Mumbai Water Metro project would mark a new chapter in modern urban water transport in India and help reduce pressure on the city’s road and rail networks through effective use of waterways.
According to the Chief Minister, the Maharashtra government has been working on the concept of sustainable water transport for the past decade. He said the necessary infrastructure blueprint for water-based transportation in Mumbai has now been prepared, creating the need for modern and sustainable vessels.
Fadnavis added that demand for sustainable water transport is expected to grow rapidly across India in the coming years, and Mumbai’s model could become a reference point for other cities.
Minister Nitesh Rane described the Mumbai Water Metro project as an important milestone in Maharashtra’s maritime development. He said the partnership with an international maritime technology company like Hyke AS would open new opportunities in port development, shipbuilding, and marine skill development in the state.
