On Wednesday, December 23, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has summoned Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal to appear before it in connection with the property demolition case of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut.

The rights body has asked the officer to make an appearance before them at 11 am on January 20, 2021, after an advocate had filed a petition with the MHRC on the demolition controversy.

The Bombay High Court, on November 27, had granted relief to actress Kangana Ranaut in her plea challenging demolition activity by BMC and called it illegal and wrongful.

On September 9, the office of Kangana Ranaut’s production house Manikarnika Films in Bandra's Pali Hill area had been demolished by the BMC. In September, Ranaut had filed the petition when the demolition process was initiated by BMC. The High Court had stayed the demolition drive being undertaken by the BMC at Ranaut's property. Ranaut, through her lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui, had moved the High Court against the demolition at her office.

The demolition had come at a time when Ranaut was engaged in a bitter war of words with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut after her remarks that she feels unsafe in Mumbai and has no trust in the Mumbai Police after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
