On Friday, June 26, Maharashtra witnessed the highest single-day jump in the number of coronavirus cases with 5,024 cases reported in one day, along with 175 deaths. With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state reach 1.52,765 cases out of which 65,829 are active.

On the other hand, the tally of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai has reached 72,175 cases with 1,297 cases reported on Friday, with 117 deaths. Further, Pune has the second most affected city in Maharashtra with 15,673 coronavirus patients, followed by Thane with 11,961 cases.

Over the last few days, the number of coronavirus cases in the state has seen an exponential increase, however, this is the first time when the tally has crossed the 5,000-mark in a single day. Observing this, the state government of Maharashtra along with the local municipal corporations are taking necessary measures to contain the spread of coronavirus cases.

Meanwhile, some containment zones across Maharashtra are currently observing lockdown. But, under the 'Mission Begin Again' initiative, the state government has permitted some relaxations for businesses and services to resume post the lockdown.

The fifth phase of the coronavirus lockdown is scheduled to end on June 30, 2020, and during a recent virtual interaction with the Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked all the states to draft a plan to begin the 'Unlock 2.0' phase. After June 30, Maharashtra would permit the public transport sector - such as taxi and auto services - to resume the services. In a recently helped meeting, MMRTA officials along with the auto and taxi union decided to increase the fare by ₹2 or3 and the confirmation of same will be announced in a few days.

Further, salons and gyms will also open in the state from June 28, 2020. Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation confirmed the same on Thursday, June 25, 2020, stating that this will be allowed only if they adhere to new guidelines. SoPs for the same, which would focus on safety and cleanliness, will be released soon.

Several areas in Mumbai have seen an increase in cases. While some wards have shown improvement over the last few weeks, parts of North Mumbai have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases. Areas like Andheri, Jogeshwari, Malad, Borivali, Kandivali, Dahisar, Mulund, Bhandup and others witnessed an 'exponential' increase.
