In order to make the civic body perform their duties, Mahim residents have started a signature campaign against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) G North ward. They want the officials to remove slums from footpaths and implement Bombay High Court’s order of banning encroachments within a 150-metre radius around the station.

After they failed to yield response, they collaborated with the Advanced Locality Management (ALM).

Herman Dias, secretary of the ALM said that they were constantly under the threat of road accidents as there is no space to walk on footpaths. He added that if the signature campaign fails, they will file a contempt of court against the BMC.

The BMC assistant commissioner Ashok Khairnar said that they regularly take action against encroachments but they keep coming up. Along with this, human rights organisations stop them from removing the encroachments, he added.

For now, the ALM has managed to gather more than 300 signatures and aims to get around 3000 signatures more in a week’s time to force the BMC to take timely action.
