As the Maharashtra Home Ministry restricted entry of ordinary visitors in Mantralaya, a state government official was suspected to have the caught the coronavirus or COVID-19. This led to a chaotic atmosphere in the Maharashtra secretariat in Mumbai.

However, it has been learned that the state government official has been tested negative for the novel coronavirus or COVID-19. The official and his family are at the risk of contracting the coronavirus as they were in close contact with his brother who returned from the United States earlier this month.

The brother of the state government employee was tested positive for coronavirus on March 14, the Hindustan Times reported. This led to a fearful atmosphere among the people working at Mantralaya.

From cabins to chairs including the railings of stairs, escalators, corridors were sanitised to stop the possible spread of the deadly virus. According to government sources, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope wanted the Mantralaya to shut down for seven days.

However, the Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday decided that the government offices will remain open and functional with 50 per cent staff attendance. “There is no holiday for the government employees,” Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray clarified.

The state government employee and his family members including his wife and child were quarantined at Kasturba Hospital earlier. However, the official has been tested negative for coronavirus.

Currently, the state government employee suspected to have contracted coronavirus has been sent on leave. However, the other employees at the Mantralaya are worried and have expressed that the government has only restricted entry of the visitors but there is no provision for the thousands who work here.

Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state with 41 active and infected cases of the coronavirus or COVID-19. In order to curb the crowd in public transports, the Maharashtra government has ordered the private offices to provide ‘Work from Home’ to their employees. However, the government didn’t suspend the public transport in the state.
