The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally installed a ramp on Marine Drive near the Wankhede Stadium. They also painted a wheelchair symbol on it. As per sources, more ramps will be added along the Marine Drive promenade. The entire stretch is expected to be wheelchair accessible by 2025.
This is the result of three years of work by Siddharth Mhatre and Rahul Ramugade to improve accessibility in Mumbai, as per a report by HT. Earlier, they also moved the bollards so wheelchairs could enter the Shivaji Park.
As a wheelchair user & cricket fan, I face trouble crossing post-match near Wankhede. BMC C Ward installed bollards (thank you!) but the sloped footpath is inaccessible & risky.

After Marine Drive, the next goal is the Wankhede Stadium. Two weeks ago, Mhatre and Ramugade visited the Mumbai Cricket Association to talk about making the stadium accessible.
At the same time, the BMC is working on a plan to assess all footpaths in the city. The project will last three years and cost INR 2 crore. They plan to find routes that are easy for disabled people to use.
The BMC had invited NGOs to help in February 2024, based on a Bombay High Court order. But many NGOs were not included. A new invitation was sent in May. The BMC is now waiting for proposals.
